Babies, Caesars, & Deer (Have pretty much NOTHING in common)

Went up to a much quieter campground. With the passing of the last holiday weekend of summer, the hunters are  out and the yahoos are gone. Hunters by and large make much quieter neighbors.

People in B Loop closing up camp, except of course for Tofts and Patmores. Mike came up and took his trailer out for the year.

Richard’s quad is still in various pieces in his garage as he is replacing his rear differential. Patricia and I stayed in camp and sent the boys away to go hunt on their own in the General.  They left early Saturday morning with minimal fuss.

Us girls had a nice quiet time by the camp fire, the day was pretty chilly. Mostly cloudy, and we did not see the sun until mid afternoon. Highest temperature for the whole day hit 11 degrees. Nice fall weather!

Tenille and Sophia came to visit for the afternoon, though it was a little chilly. Sophia didn’t seem to notice, but her little hands were so cold! Still, she had fun exploring the wild and playing in Patmore’s sand box.

What’s the best way to keep a toddler from getting hurt around a campfire? Well, you build Wood Henge, of course.

After they headed home, Patricia and I went hard to work on  packing up some seasonal items in our camps that we can take home now. And by packing I mean drinking Caesars.

Had enough tea, but Caesars do keep the blood warm.

Didn’t hear a bloody thing from the boys until Richard texted Patricia around 430 and HE told HER that Sven got a deer. Which promptly got Sven in shit for not telling me directly. But, they got a deer!!! 12 DAYS  into the season! We are just so pleased. After getting skunked last year (our first year with an ATV) we really needed this season to be good. And now it is. She’s not a huge beastie, but still a nice sized whitetail doe and she will be very tasty.

First Deer, 2020 Season

The boys carried on further on the trails where Sven and I went last weekend, and found the mother lode of deer tracks out there. They said they’d never seen anything like it in their lives! Like a whole herd of deer had passed through. They got a shot off at one earlier in the day but entirely missed. Still, Sven got a chance at redemption later in the day and took this girl down beautifully. She was standing in a thick grove of sapling trees and he had maybe a 6 inch window to take a neck shot from about 30 yards. She went down, but didn’t die right away so he……how Viking is this……….he walked up and knifed her in the heart. She died seconds after, a good kill.

So Richard got the joy of helping with a field dressing and they loaded her up on the General and brought her home! Triumphant hunters and I am very proud.

They got back to camp around 8 pm and we packed her in ice and loaded her into the game cooler. We hung her in the garage and let her drain out into the cooler overnight, then Sven & Richard took the hide off Monday night. Sven and I processed on Tuesday & Wednesday evenings, all told took about 4 hours to get it all packaged up. My freezer is now heavier by 36 pounds of lovely vension and we are happy.

Hidden Tenderloins

Take THAT, 2020!!  We didn’t get skunked, and we’ve got a LOT of hunting season left to fill the freezer. What a great way to start.
